Happy 14th Birthday LegendMUD!

Can you believe it's been 14 years already? I won't start reminiscing because I know that you all are anxious to see what new presents we have for you this year. So without further ado, here is what we have in store for you!

Games, Games and More Games!
* We know you've all been enjoying the week-long celebration that the PR department has been running for you with the excellent selection of games and events. Be sure to check the EVENTS calendar for upcoming games!

Legend Heroes!
* Want to do something more for Legend, but just don't feel you want to apply to immort? Well then, becoming a Hero might be right up your alley. Heroes are level 50 characters that, once accepted, are helpers to the Immortals. Heroes will be able to do such thing as test areas and code prior to install, assist with advertising Legend, and more. The application can be found here.

Website Update: Newbie Section!
* Carnegie worked hard on adding in this new section of the website. This section gives a run-down of each hometown, including notable mobs, quest hints, skill teacher hints and more! We've also added in a line on character creation that shows a prospective new player the link for this section of the website. That link is here

Warnings Amnesty!
* All currently non-banned, non-locked characters will experience a 'clean slate' as far as their warnings go. The warnings will remain on the player file for tracking and history purposes.

Those who have permanently archived characters or those who are banned may make an appeal to imp@legendmud.org (see appeals process, below).

Appeals Process Change and Warning Mitigation
* Appeals will be conducted through the imps directly. In order to start an appeal, you must email imp@legendmud.org with ' Appeal' in the subject line. Mudmail to one or both imps will be considered as well, but there may be longer delays in starting the evaluation of an appeal when sent via mudmail.

* Any public posting on Legend-owned boards (in-game or web) about a warning prior to an appeal will invalidate any future appeal. Imm knowledge of appeals-through-other means (email, other boards) may be considered as part of the appeals process.

* The imps may elect to allow a player to mitigate up to 2 warnings in a calendar year by performing some level of 'community service' determined at the time of appeal judgment. This will be handled on a case-by-case basis and the imps always have the option to not offer a chance to mitigate a warning.

Multiple PKE characters!
* That's right, after all these years we've decided to allow players to have more than one PK enabled character. Of course, there are rules to this! You must have an account to take advantage of this new feature. See Rufus's Welcome board post for more details.

More Familiar Options for Create Mages!
* Tired of the same old imp? Want an owl instead? Now you can have not only the option of an owl, but a wolf, cat or crow as well! You simply add the familiar option after the 'ex' of the spell. You can only have one familiar at a time. It will only cast its spells once the previous ones are gone. Spell costs are the same.

New Cause Mage Spell: Fortification!
* Fortification is a new armor type of spell for 3rd circle cause mages that gives a small resistance much like stoneskin. I won't spoil what exactly it resists here, I'll let you all find out! Spell cost is in sync with stoneskin.

Changes to Weapon Quality!
* Effective quality of weapons has been increased. There are still Q1-Q5 weapons, but the quality difference between Q1 and Q5 is now the as Q3-Q5 was before. There are still as many stops in between, it's just over a narrower range. The speed of Q5 weapons is not changing at all, just the lower-quality ones.

This change makes newbie weapons a bit more useful as well as not having to go directly to q5 to get a 'decent' weapon. Incremental upgrades that are more rent friendly are more viable.

Weapons that are Q0 or less still suck, pretty much :)

* All multi-weapon swings (any time you're wielding a weapon, basically) you are guaranteed at least 2 attacks except under rare circumstances.

Citizenship Quests!
* Started in London, but now realize you'd rather be a mage than a surgeon? Now you can change your citizenship by going through one of the hometowns' citizenship quests. These quests are costly in experience, 37.5 million to be exact. It also requires that you have a total of 47.5 million experience. With that, you are also charged 100k gold during the quest. And they do require a good amount of work to complete. Once you've completed the quest, your skills and/or spells will be completely wiped and you will be able to then relearn skills for your new hometown. Those under level 11 can do these quests without cost. The quests for London, Arabia, Tara, Kleinstadt, and San Francisco are completed with Lima on the way soon.

London Update!
* Nestor has been at it again, and now his London Update is ready for you all!

The streets of London open today on the West bank of the City of Westminster. You will be able to visit the famous Chamber of the Lords where politics of the English empire are debated, stroll under the tower of Big Ben and even visit the offices of Scotland Yard, the headquarters of the city police.

This mini-upgrade to the London hometown introduces a new setting for the town's citizenship quest as well as a few new quests, encounters and housing expansion!

And last, but certainly not least(because it took me long enough to finish it!)...

Ancient Rome!
* In 85 AD, Rome had mostly rebuilt from the great fires that plagued the city proper and slowly began to prosper once again. The Circus Maximus and Colosseum were only two of the buildings completed during this time, not to mention the repair of the Temple of Jupiter and the palace on Palatine Hill.

The Colosseum was once again the pride of Rome. To amuse himself, as well as the citizens, Domitian often held stranger-than-usual games, such as gladiator contests at night, female combatants, and dwarves.

Senators, once the real rulers of the empire, now feared their emperor. His harsh punishments and cruel ways made it obvious that he held contempt for the senate and its members.

That's right, Rome is finally finished! Visit the ancient city of Rome in the year 85AD. The Emperor Domitian's rebuilding of Rome is well underway. The Colosseum has just been completed and not too far behind is the Imperial Palace. Stroll the streets of Rome and visit the Forum Romanum. Stand under the arch of the great emperor Augustus, and if you dare, join in the gladiator battles! Not only can you fight the gladiators, but you can use this new arena to fight each other.

The practice Arena in Rome is the first of it's kind to use the ARENA flag code. This means that even if you aren't pkenabled you can fight at no loss. The arena announces the winners of the fights on the Arena channel. In the future, this arena can be used for PK tournaments as well.

Be sure to thank the staff for all the hard work they've put into yet another great birthday for Legend. They've all done a wonderful job!

MONTHLY PURGES TO BE REINSTATED!

We will be restarting the monthly purges starting December 1. We'll be running the script for the next 3 weeks to make sure that everything is working as it should, but no purges will happen during this test run.

If your character is in an account, and you have at least one character in that account active, then all of the characters in that account are safe from purges.

Inactive accounts will purge, but this will be every 6 months.

PKILL CHANGES!

September 16th, 2007

ARCHEOLOGISTS UNEARTH TREASURES AND MORE IN EGYPTIAN PYRAMID!

New Area Installed

Located on the plateau of Gizzeh, the Great Pyramid has always been a place of mystery to mankind. Designated one of the Seven Wonders, the Great Pyramid was the tomb of the mighty Pharaoh Khufu who ruled over Egypt around 2600 BC.

During the Old Kingdom era, kings of Egypt began to emphasize their divine associations and their people believed them to be manifestations of the god Horus. After the time of Khufu, kings were also proclaimed to be sons of the great sun god Re. After his death, the king became associated with Osiris, father of Horus and god of the underworld. The king's sacred powers were passed on to the new ruler -- usually his son.

By the end of the 19th century, Egypt and its mysteries had become very popular in Europe, especially after Consul Bonaparte's campaign which brought Egypt back to the political scene. After Napoleon's defeat, Egypt fell in the hands of the Sultan Ali Pasha. It is time for all adventurers and explorers of the world to venture on the Nile and go after hidden tombs and other archeological discoveries!

The Great Pyramid of Khufu is an adventure limited to a party of 7 characters and is balanced out for a group of five L50 characters.

RUSSIAN WORKERS REVOLT!

NEW AREA INSTALLED

June 20, 2007
LegendMUD's newest area has now been installed: Petrograd, Russia, at the time of the Russian Revolution! Taking place in 1917, the area features a Russia under the rule of Tsar Nicholas II and his wife, along with their widely distrusted advisor, Grigori Rasputin. But the people are fed up with working conditions in their country, and the time may be ripe for a change in government... The area is brimming with things to see, do and kill, so be sure to book passage soon.

This is Mariachi's first area to be installed, so this also means he has been promoted to full Builder. Be sure to give him a word of congratulations!

NEW IMMORTAL!

May 4th, 2007 - Please be sure to congratulate Autumn as the newest immortal of LegendMUD! Autumn joins the PR department. Be sure to give her some time to get used to her new job.

Lastly...
When in game, be sure to read Chaykin's welcome board post regarding Newbie helping.

BIRTHDAY ANNOUNCEMENTS!

February 14th, 2007 - Happy 13th birthday LegendMUD, and welcome to the brand new LegendMUD website! It's been a labor of love for the immortal staff, but at last here we are with a site that promises to make the information you're looking for easier to find with fewer clicks, presented with slick new visuals based on Legend's theme. Hope you enjoy it!

New Feature:
ACCOUNTS!

Player accounts are here!

What are accounts?

If you have a herd of characters, an account will help you keep them all corralled together. Once you've created an account (with ACCOUNT CREATE) you can add other characters to the account. Then, when you login any of these characters, you can see a full list of all your characters with basic stats, and easily switch among them.

But there's more! With an account you also get an account mailbox! Messages received in your account mailbox can be received by any of your characters. This makes them an excellent way of sending out immortal game prizes as well as making sure that immortals can reach you if you have an open question. Now how much would you pay?

Accounts allow you to copy your character configuration settings from one character to another or from characters onto the account itself (and back). When you create a new character from the account menu, it will automatically receive all settings stored on the account. You can even log in any character using your account password -- no need to worry about separate passwords for each one.

But that's not all! Your account settings can also unlock extra features that link up your character with the outside world. Just for starters, you can control your Legendary Times (LT) subscription directly from your account without talking to immortals or using the web site. Look for additional features to be added in the near future.

For more information on getting started, see HELP ACCOUNT, HELP MEMO, and HELP PROFILE. ACCOUNT HELP is also a good way to see what you can do with your account or just use ACCOUNT CREATE to dive right in!

Resurrected Feature:
AUTOMATED AUCTIONS!

The Automated Auction System is Back!

We're proud to announce the return of a feature that will be instantly familiar to our oldest players and brand new to everyone else: the Automated Auction system! The Auction channel you're all familiar with is now fully automated, allowing all players to buy and sell items with a simple set of commands and to have the cost deducted from their accounts automatically!

* CONSIGN your item for the starting price that you specify, or leave off the amount to allow the MUD to set a starting price in line with the item's rent.

* RECLAIM your item if you change your mind about selling it, but be careful: Don't auction an item lightly, because reclaiming it now requires a fee of a percentage of the starting bid you set.

* BID on an item you like when another player puts it up on the block, for the amount you want to pay. Be sure you really want the item, because if you're the high bidder when the auction ends, it's yours! And don't expect to overbid a huge amount up front.

* CANCEL a bid you've made if you change your mind before the auction ends.

* Accept the current bid with ACCEPTBID after at least two ticks have gone by. If no new bids are coming in, accept quickly...don't tie up the channel!

* Remember, the Auction system is not to be used improperly for transferring large sums of cash. The channel will be monitored for abuses.

Major Modifications:
DEATH, DEATHTRAPS, NEW SPELL: RESURRECT!

Deathtraps eating equipment are a thing of the past! Death XP loss penalties have been retooled! The Resurrect spell is in! Here are the Gory Details:

DEATHTRAPS * DT's no longer eat equipment. Instead, your corpse, equipment intact, will remain inside the DT. (WHAT? Keep reading...)

* You will still retain notes when you hit a DT. The rest of your items will be on your corpse.

* Instead of eating equipment, Deathtraps will cost double a normal death of XP up to 1,500,000 XP at level 50.

* You will now be able to recover your corpse from Deathtraps. How? Keep reading. Don't try and walk in again, though!

Please note: This is a forward-facing change ONLY; previous DT victims who died prior to this install will not be compensated in any way.

Also note: Some mobs will retain their ability to destroy corpses of their victims. In these situations, the equipment will appear on the ground.

* Deathtrap avoidance Era Abilities will continue to work as they have, avoiding the ill effects of deathtraps. A successful DT avoidance will result in no XP lost.

* True DT rooms will still not allow fleeing; going forward, you may eventually be able to flee into rooms that are in ALL CAPS. Please note that this will not be considered a bug.

XP LOSS PENALITIES * All deaths now fall into one of three categories: DT death, PK death or Normal Death:

* Running into a Deathtrap will always cost 2 times a normal death penalty.

* PK Death will cost half a normal death penalty. PK death penalties will be assessed if the killing blow is due to PK damage, or if death by any cause except Deathtrap while the victim has an overabundance of PK damage.

* Normal death includes, but is not limited to, death by mob, bleeding, poison, drowning, or falling. All methods of dying other than PK or DT assess XP loss as though a mob killed you. Though this is in essence a 'nerf', death to means other than mob kill accounted for less than 2% of all deaths.

CORPSE CHANGES * PC corpses will now last 6 real-life days as long as they have equipment or money. PC corpses without equipment will last 10 ticks.

RESURRECT SPELL * The resurrect spell is implemented and has been changed to a 'know' spell. Fear not, those cause mages who have practices this spell, you will retain your cast levels you have obtained.

Resurrection is a spell by which you can cause a group member's corpses, anywhere in the mud to re-appear at the location of the caster. Only corpses with items in them will qualify to be summoned. Empty corpses will not move.

The caster and the person being resurrected must be in the same room and in the same group.

Casters CANNOT resurrect themselves. It must always be cast by another caster.

Resurrection can be cast anywhere, but there are increased penalties for casting it anywhere other than an inn or the caster's house, or the friend-of-the-caster's house as it is more taxing on the mage in casting said spell.

If successful, it will pull all qualifying corpses to the caster. The person on whom the resurrection spell is cast will suffer a severe 5- tick penalty to their stats.

Resurrections require the party being resurrected to be holding in inventory a pulsing blue crystal. These crystals are currently available from Douban only. Be warned that these crystals are expensive (especially for higher level people) and they are tied to your level:

* Level 1 to 25: 100 coins. * Level 26 to 35: 1,000 coins. * Level 36 to 45: 5,000 coins. * Level 46 to 49: 10,000 coins. * Level 50: 15,000 coins.

If you advance past your crystal's level, it will no longer work for you. Higher level crystals will, however, work for lower level characters. Please note that the crystals, though charged in ranges, are tied to your level. A level 1 and a level 25 crystal cost the same amount, but a level 1 crystal will not work for a level 25 character. IMPORTANT: the person being resurrected, NOT the caster, must hold the proper level stone.

Resurrection is currently the only means by which you can recover corpses from a DT -- make a few mage friends. A successful cast can range between 300 and 500 mana, so you may want to figure out what their favorite drinks are ahead of time.

Resurrection is technically considered a 'heal' type spell and thus is illegal to offer as a BOT service.

New Area:
MEDIEVAL JAPAN!

LegendMUD is pleased to announce the opening of our newest area: Medieval Japan! Featuring a multitude of quests, mobs of all level ranges, and all the cool Japanese equipment you've always wanted, Nestor has worked long and hard to bring this fantastic new area to life. Swing by and check it out north of medieval Macao, and be sure to congratulate Nestor and give your feedback!
