Inside LegendMUD: Skills & Skillsets
LegendMUD uses a classless skills system. This means that any person who develops their character towards their specific goals will be able to learn skills of that type. It doesn't mean everyone can learn everything.
LegendMUD does not use PRACTICE for acquiring skills. Rather, you can learn skills from mobs who would reasonably be expected to know that skill. Most teaching mobs will answer to the question "teach" or "learn" and tell you what they are able to teach you, although they often require a small quest or a flat fee to do so. Be sure you have a PRACTICE session left by checking SCORE. You start with 4 sessions and acquire a new practice session each time you level.
So, if you are looking to learn the fishing skill, you would check to make sure you qualify (by typing 'ALLSKILLS'), then think of possible mobs who might teach that skill. The most logical choice here would be to go look for fishermen-type mobs.
Once you find a fisherman, type 'ASK FISHERMAN TEACH' to get a list of the skills the mob teaches. Some mobs only teach one skill; some do not teach any skills. If the mob responds favorably by claiming to teach the skill you wish to learn, then type 'ASK FISHERMAN FISHING'. The mob should then teach you the skill.
Whether or not you can learn a given skill will depend on what sort of person your character is. For example: anyone can learn how to fish; but it takes a particular level of keensightedness and dexterity to become a master archer. Skills may have other requirements as well: such as learning about anatomy before becoming a practicing surgeon. Skills also sometimes have level requirements to learn.
All skills have a helpfile(s) available using the skillname as a keyword.
The range of skills available to learn on LegendMUD covers everything from the more mundane skills like tanning hides into leather or fishing up to advanced fighting techniques and healing arts.
